Urban legend has it that Elvis is still alive, and if so, you might have a pretty good chance of catching him at Whitney's Diner in the McMahon Plaza shopping center in Hikes Point. After all, The King would feel right at home at Whitney's Diner, 3061 Breckinridge Lane, where's there's just about everything from the 1950s except blue suede shoes. You'll find red checkerboard curtains and light-up jukebox, posters and pictures of "I Love Lucy," "The Honeymooners," James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis himself.
But it's the prices on the all-American fare that truly make a meal at Whitney's feel like a jaunt back into time.
A hearty breakfast with country fried steak topped with pepper gravy, toast or biscuit and two eggs goes for $3.99 — surely a good deal even back in the days of Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper.
For an extra buck, you can fill up with the Ultimate Breakfast: two eggs scrambled atop two biscuits, with home fries, pepper gravy, sausage and bacon. The same $4.99 price tag will also buy the country ham breakfast, the Western scrambled eggs, a pancake platter and several other choices.
Lunch is also a bargain. For $3.99, you can get the Whitney Burger — two Angus burgers on a double-decker bun with American cheese — a chicken breast, pork chop or pulled-pork barbecue sandwiches and more.
The $4.99 lunch options include an open-face roast beef plate, country-fried steak, Swiss steak, turkey and dressing and more, each with a side dish. For dinner, $6.49 will buy many of the lunch dishes, plus two side items, as well as dishes not on the lunch menu, such as liver and onions and clam strips.
The top-dollar dinner menu comes in at $8.49 and includes choices such as roast beef and mashed potatoes, fish and shrimp, Salisbury steak, country ham and more.
The $3.49 appetizers include fried green tomatoes, bacon cheese fries, chili cheese nachos or fries, mozzarella sticks and Jalapeño poppers.
Whitney's can take care of your sweet tooth, too, with assorted pies and cakes at a remarkable $1.75 per slice. The flavors of the cream pies — coconut, chocolate and banana — hark back to the 1950s but remain favorites. The diner also offers old-time milk shakes and sundaes ranging from $1.75 to $2.75.
Children under 12 can eat for $1.99 from the children's menu.
